Pressure problems

Not showing any pressure on the outlet valve but showing 150psi on tank? Any ideas?

C2002 leaking air
by: Bill

Hey Mark, I think the cylinder pump in your compressor has a small hole in the top of it. Is that where the air is coming out?

If so, this is likely the unloader for this type of compressor, and air will leak out of this hole as long as the compressor is running, and for a few seconds after the compressor stops.

If the air continues to leak out of the hole after a few seconds, monitor the tank air gauge and see if the pressure starts to drop in the tank.

If it does, then it indicates that air is blowing by the tank check valve and you will need to check the check valve again, as likely there is something wrong with it or the installation.

Still leaking
by: Bill

Mark, as I noted in your earlier post, if air is leaking out of the hole in the top of the cylinder when the compressor is not running, the only place the air can be coming from is the tank.

The item that holds the air in the tank to allow it to be available for your air tools is the tank check valve and it's purpose is to keep the air in the tank until it flows out the discharge couple to the air tool.

If you have changed the tank check valve, check it again, as it must be leaking to allow air to flow by it and out of the cylinder head.

What other source of air is there?

porter cable 2002 regulator gauge
by: Bill

If your regulator is set for, say, 120 PSI and your compressor can deliver that pressure, then the regulator gauge should show 120 PSI when the tank pressure exceeds that pressure level.

If the regulator gauge drops to zero, that indicates that there is no air in tank. If you use more air than the compressor can generate, regardless of the setting on the regulator, the pressure will drop.

If the tank gauge is reading 30 PSI regardless of what the air compressor is doing, replace the tank gauge with a new one.

C2002 tank check valve
by: Bill

Not quite sure what screws you are referring to, Ted.

The tank check valve on the C2002 is inside the fitting that threads into the tank, and onto which the line from the pump connects.

You probably will have to remove the clamp of course.

Bad check valve?
by: Ted O.

I have a C2002 that leaks air when off. It sounds like it is coming from within the motor assembly [under the black housing.] If I am reading your previous suggestions correctly, you are saying that it is likely the check-valve on the tank letting air back up into the compressor and allowing it to leak out, yes? That you suggest I replace the check valve and it will likely solve the issue, correct?

Separately, after removing all of the screws on the housing, I can't seem to open it up to separate it from the tank. I can open it up some, but not all the way or remove it from the tank. What am I missing?

Thank you

porter cable c2002 keeps running
by: Bill

I suspect that the problem will be that your pressure switch has failed closed, meaning that power is still flowing across the switch when the set point has been reached, instead of the switch tripping off and cutting the power to the motor.

You can buy an OEM replacement for about $30 on line.
