pluming from head of pump to air tank

Should there be a check valve on the 1/2 copper line that gos from the top of air pump to tank?

Wes, usually the check valve is part of the fitting that goes into the air tank, with the line from there over to the pressure switch and unloader valve.

So, yes, you do want a check valve at the tank. You don't want it upstream of the unloader valve and pressure switch line, however.
