The first thing that comes to mind is that it's running beyond it's design limits.

Have a look at the Duty Cycle page linked from the site map page.

Could this be the issue for yours?

I bought the same ss5n5 compressor from Tractor supply store. I bought the extended warranty. Ive had it about 5 years now.

I ran my auto shop with it. We have literally abused it.We had one problem when it was 2 years old.The pressure shut off/start up switch died and it wouldnt turn on. The ingersoll guys said they would have tractor supply give us one and they would send someone to install it.

We couldnt wait roe the service guy.Time is money.We installed it ourselves and back to abusing it.

I got hurt and had to close my shop 2 years ago. Everything came out to my ranch.Im hooked up to the same box as my well. It has its own breakers of 30 amps. Its been left on accidently all night many times. Obviously it doesnt get the same abuse it used to but we never maintained it properly.

I was just noticing the oil low and the seapage just starting on the top gasket of the compressor head and around the pressure pipe towards the tank.

There is no air leaks.If I shut the ball valve at the tank it stays full of air forever and never comes on.

My shop hoses and such leak if I dont close the valve.

Im gonna change the oil and check the bolts a few others mentioned on this site.I guess after 5 years I better change the air filter too.

I dont know what to say. Ive had good luck with my older air tools from IR . I have to admit my newer IR impact guns dont have as much kick as my 15 year old one has....still. (its an Ir 232 c).

Ive definitely had better luck than some of these other fellows and I feel for them.Tools cost hard earned money. Ill have to see if mine has the same motor you guys had trouble with. Thanks for the heads up guys . I hope my luck holds out . I just started my car project too.Working on the sheet metal. We all start there I guess. Good luck in the future guys.

 It's an IR!

I don't know about air compressors, but I know about IR. They take over companies and then cut costs. If you can't read between the lines this means running any Union run plants into non-union plants so they can close the union plants. Then they tell the people that did have 3 full time shifts of people that took pride in their work that they are the reason they had to send the work out! It also means that what used to be good heavy metal is replaced with thin crap and wiring that is, in the least, doubtable. If the paint line was running a little off that day but there aren't any others to use, those parts are ok today. Are you getting my drift? These are the highest priced (and supposedly highest quality)units available, whether it's home protection, tools, your compressor, large equipment like back-loaders, or ac/heaters! I will never again own anything made by IR and will check out the product to be sure it isn't made by IR! Happy compressor hunting and good luck!

I'd just like to throw in My two cents. I purchased the IR compressor at Tractor Supply about 4 years ago. After 2 years (out of warranty)the motor went. IR refused to replace it. I ended up getting a motor from Grainger for around 450.00. A while later, the pump started leaking oil where the head meets the case. All of the bolts were loose. I checked the head, and they were loose too. Now I check them periodically. A friend of mine bought the exact compressor from Tractor Supply and after a while the head flew apart while running. I would strongly suggest not purchasing these from Tractor Supply unless you can get some type of extended warranty. Or better yet, get a Champion or Quincy from TP Tools in Canfield, Ohio. Just my 2 cents.

I BOUGHT THIS INGERSALL RAND COMPRESSOR FROM HOME DEPOT YEARS AGO HAS HARDLY ANY HOURS ON IT. STARTED OFF WITH COMPRESSOR LEAKING THEY REPLACED IT AFTER GOING THROUGH ALL THE RED TAPE. IT WORKS FINE BUT DON'T LET IT PUMP UP 2 OR 3 TIMES IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY TRIP. LET IT COOL OFF AND RESET AND IT MIGHT PUMP BACK UP BUT USUALLY IT WILL TRIP. I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM SINCE DAY ONE. IT IS WIRED STRAIGHT TO THE BREAKER BOX ABOUT 4 FOOT.HAS A 80 GAL. TANK, YOU COULD NOT GIVE ME ANOTHER ONE, BUT I THOUGHT THESE WERE ONE OF THE BEST, BOY DID I GET FOOLED.

I'm having the same issue with the same compressor only mine is about 5 years old with about 800 hours on it. IR SS5n5 5h.p. Emerson 5521194 motor and a G-145 pump.

It runs fine with no load but, when I close the service valves, it starts dragging. Somewhere between 40 and 80 p.s.i..

I shut it down with the pressure switch contacts lever before going into a thermal overload scenario.

Once it is off I don't hear any leaking anywhere.

I'm about to crack the inlet line (from the pump to the tank) under pressure and see what I get. No leak. Checking wiring schematic. Nope. O.K. here's a QUESTION what about switching the hots at the motor terminals? Motor doesn't get hot?... Pump doesn't get hot?... I'm not lost I just don't want to have to explain the whole thing to my wife. I had to pout for a month about my dead compressor before she could release MY money for this one. I built it up to be one of the best in the business AMERICAN MADE worth every penny. All the dumb questions like "Why won't IR make it right?" "Have you talked to the people at Tractor Supply?" "What did they say?" They said for me to go EFF myself. "Oh my gosh! I can't believe that. They can't talk to cutomers that way why....." Those weren't their exact words dunce I'm paraphrasing to the bottom line. "What the heck does PARATHAZILING mean?"

you must know what your voltage and amp draw are at startup and operation. Many problems like yours are voltage/breaker/wire size problems after six months you should have also changed compressor oil and air filter.
