Old 3Z170B - Noisy & No Compression on 1 of 3 heads

by Pete J

Hi, I have an old 3Z170B that is acting up.

My son has been using it the last couple of years and now it needs some help. Doesn't look like the oil has been changed in that time and the air filter are missing.

I've had good luck with it buying it used more than 25 years ago for my home garage and wired in 220v.

One head is not sucking in air when you put your hand over the top while it's running. Still coming up to pressure slowly but is noisy on that head at about 40 psi. Any suggestions before I take it apart?

I also don't see the parts coming up on Grainger any more. Do you know if they still carry the older parts. The last time I bought parts for it was in May of 2002 and they sent me a users manual and parts list along with my parts. Thanks for any help. Pete

Pete, sounds like the intake valve has let go, at least that would be the first thing I'd check.

Call Grainger, they may have some older model parts kicking around. Don't just rely on the website. See if you can get to a live person that's been around a while.

Check out sources for finding another one like this. Maybe you cannibalize another for parts.

Anyone else have any suggestions for John?

Cheers,

Bill

3Z170B compressor
by: Dave

Hey Pete Glad to hear all went well finding parts. I've got the same bullet proof compressor, but one day it made a weird noise and a puff of smoke came from the compressor. The middle cylinder looked to have a piece of plastic in it looking at the hole under the filter. So I removed it now on shut down air comes out from this hole. I don't have a parts list or manual to reference. Did I remove something I shouldn't have?

Got The Parts
by: Pete

I was able to get a good customer service rep at Grainger on my first visit and he rounded up all the parts. Should have the all by the beginning of next week. Valve head gasket let go. Looking forward to another 20 years of service out of it. Thanks for the help. Pete

You are most welcome, and good luck with the rebuild. Another 20 years, my, if my compressor lasted 5 I'd be happy.

Needs manuals for new Speediare Model #4XA62 technician lost them

This compressor is still available from Grainger, Geoff. If you contact their spare parts department, they should be able to dig you up one.

Or, anyone else have this manual for Geoff?

Cheers,

Bill
