Oil mist comes out of a fitting on top of the air cooler on a P185

The compressor is a Ingersol Rand P185W JD.

Two 3/8 plastic air lines run from the compressor to the top of a tank which I think has coils in it having oil flowing through these coils absorbs heat from the compressed air, after the air leaves the rotary screw compressor. The oil circculates through the coil and to a radiator which has air foced through the fins/coils on the radiator cooling the oil flowing through the coils in the radiator.

Where the air lines enter the top of the tank there are bell shaped devices a little smaller than your fist. The one line, that is teed off sending air pressure to the air cylinder which controls the speed of the John Deere diesel engine, enters a tee at the top of the heat exchanger tank The one opening on the tee is plugged and the plug has several small holes in it. Air discharges from these small holes along with oil creating a oil mist coating the area in it's path. I'm thinking the oil is required for the rotary screws.

What is causing this oil to discharge from this modified plug?

I could send you pictures if required.

Misting from Screw Compressor valve
by: Anonymous

The filters were changed, I assume the oil was changed. Read somewhere the oil gets contaminated over time.

Had this compressor in for tune-up some months ago so forget exactly what we did. We changed the compressor oil and the two filters.

The compressor wet back in service with no complaints.

Just lately had a call about misting and replaced some O rings on a relief valve, I'm told. I personally didn't go on this call just verbally discussed the repair.

This compressor runs quite frequently for sand blasting.

1988 ingersoll rand 185

how do I fill my 1988 ingersoll rand 185 cfm with pump oil??? Please help.

My ir 1988 185 cfm needed fluids changed and it calls for 14 quarts of dexron atf fluid and would only hold 8. I drained everything I knew of. Under compressor is a drain and also under the pump that's all I saw but I've got to be wrong somewhere. Please help me?? Is there another place to put the fluid directly into the pump maybe

The pump is not the only oil reservoir..
by: Paul

I have a late 90's 185 IR compressor and there is a filter screen reservoir and oil tank besides the pump body and that's where the remaining oil goes.

I have not used ATF fluid in rotary compressors. I usually use a spec rotary screw air compressor oil...
