have a model S-121-692 L and would like to know the proper oil to reinstall into my compressor. I live in a colder climate and sometimes the shop is below freezing

Hi Bill. Your model number doesn't tell me what make of compressor or size.

Assuming it's a reciprocating compressor, the first choice in lube oil is always what the manual recommends.

If you don't have the manual, check out the stores for a same-size lubricated compressor, and see what oil they use.

Failing that, buy Compressor Oil from the local shop, not automobile lube oil. The additives are not the same.

As to storing the compressor in sub-zero environments, if you start (or try to) the compressor when it's frozen, you subject it to unnecessary load, and it normally will reduce the maintenance gap on the components.

I do not know of any compressor oil that is specified for electric motor, sub-zero operation of compressors, but maybe you can check with the folks that sell the portable, gas driven jobs that the road construction people use?

Cheers,

Bill
