Not building pressure

by Gordon
(Johnstown CO)

Builds pressure to 40 lbs and keeps running. If I shut it off and turn it back on it locks up the motor. Craftsman model 165300. Recently had to replace piston assembly after the compression failed due to a loose screw. Compression ring shattted sending small pieces everywhere. Some pieces got into the valve plate assemby but think I got it cleaned. When I shut it down the unloader value releases air until the tank is empty.

Hello Gordon.

There's quite a lot of information on my site about why compressors won't build pressure. Start here, and make sure you read the summary page giving most of the standard reasons why a compressor won't build pressure.

When you shut off your compressor, and the unloader valve opens (which it should)but instead of dumping just the air over the piston it drains the tank, then the problem is likely the check valve. Read this page too.

Cheers,

Bill
