No restart once air used

i have a small oilless 120 volt and it starts fine initially And reaches 100psi just fine and shuts off. But once it tries to restart the motor will not turn and strains until breaker is thrown. I have to release the pressure to 20lbs or less to restart it.

Almost like the pressure in the tank is holding the motor back.

P.S. When it DOES have air, I can hear it leaking out around the piston area.

See the page on this site about unloader valves, Scott, and make sure that your compressor unloader valve is working as it should.

If it isn't, that could cause this problem. If the unloader is working, add a comment here telling us that, and what model number compressor you have.
