My yardsale bought speedaire air compressor isn't working right!

Ok.i cleaned it up on the tank is the following info.( model# 5700 1A 1) stage) CCW ROT. 3hp. Ser.# 0909871-090159 ).... Pluged it in and it started running ok..for about 2 to 3 minutes, doesn't even get to 20lbs..Then it started chug, chug, chuging and stoped,i shut it off, turned it back on and nothing but a slight jerking, like it was trying to start (but not enough umph)so i shut it off again, waited, then in about 5 to 10 minutes i turned it on and its started, but did the same thing. And thats all it does.......Now ,when its running it puts out air,i checked the wiring, oil etc.I looked for cracked or loose hoses and pipes, all seem to be fine.I took the drive belt off to see if motor was bogging it down ,motor seems to run great(dayton 3 hp with external capasitor.Only thing i could find that didn't look right was when i took off the (exhaust? cover) someone had replaced the filters that fit over the screen mesh with foam rubber and it had melted into a couple of globs. Also the (flutter valves?) under the foam, the sm. ones ,on the outside edges,(not the slightly larger ones next to them )...that were fluttering as compressor was running..well one of them seemed to be bent slightly, but was still fluttering flat against the top plate that they set against when the compressor is off.(probably from some of the melted foam banging against it.)I cleaned out the crap foam.SOOOOOOOO, what do you think is causing it to shut off.I thought maybe capasitor(bad spelling)heating up and breaking circuit, but i dont know how to test it...i have a multitester, but don't know how to use it....So any help is appriciated..Thanks George...georgegouvas2@hotmail.com

George, you may not have got the bargain you hoped for.

Based on what you wrote, it does sound as though the intake valves need work, and I suspect your motor is pooched.

Sure, it runs fine with no load, but as soon as you start adding load (air pressure in the tank) it bogs down.

It's what you paid for it plus the cost of repair that will tell you if it's worth fixing or not.

Cheers,

Bill

Bill,i think your right about the motor, yesterday,i pulled the head and it ran fine,so i put head back on,and unhooked the air tube from head to tank, and it worked fine.Next i opened the drain valve on tank, air came out,The switches seemed fine,so like you said it all leads to motor problem...I've got a good 1 hp motor, but compressor has a 3 hp. on it,but i'm going to put the 1hp motor on it and see what happens. Thanks for the info..As far as compressor cost goes,i only paid twenty five $ for it,and its a 8 to 10 gal. plus its got the input and output gauges, adjustor knob. so its worth working on i think, since i got a motor on hand..and its running a serpitine belt so its probaly not real old..Speedaire/Dayton equipted.Again thanks,George

Yep you were right ,it was the motor, but swapping out the 3 horse to a 1 horse ,caused my to lose enough power to fill the tank, but its good enough 85lbs,know i have to trace a plumbing air leak, again thanks ,George
