My upright portable room air conditioner doesn't cool. Can it be repaired?

I have a GE portable upright room air conditioner that does not cool any longer, although the motor does run. Can this be repaired and what could the problem be?

Hi Shirley, your question is interesting, and challenging, since I know virtually nothing about air conditioning compressors... except, a compressor is a compressor, right? And, I enjoy an awesome number of visitors with skills that continue to amaze me. Maybe they too, can help?
That your motor is running is good. Yet it sounds as though the compressor itself is not kicking in.
The motor is running as the temp sensor is "saying" I want it colder. The motor starts (which is supposed to happen) and for some reason the air compressor doesn't, or perhaps it does, but the coolant is gone... so hard to figure out via email.
OK, who can help Shirley with her Air Conditioner problem?
Cheers,
Bill
