The hot air then is likely caused by heat transfer through the metal from the motor to the tank, heating up the air in the reservoir.

Why? I think your motor is overheating, heating the air is part of that process, and when the motor gets too hot (perhaps overloaded) and bogs down, it pulls too many amps for the circuit.

From the info supplied, this is my best guess.
