My home a/c unit keeps blowing fuses at random intervals

I have a Carrier 8000. The unit is probably about 10 years old. When I replace the 3 amp fuse and allow the fan to run, it is okay. However, when the a/c unit kicks in, sometimes it will run (cycling on AND off) for days before blowing the fuse, and other times when the a/c unit kicks on, it blows the fuse (at worst) within a couple of seconds.

Lacey, I don't know much about air conditioning systems, though I suspect that the coolant compressor on them will work in much the same way as those used for compressed air.

Your symptoms suggest to me that either your electric motor is failing, or the capacitor / starter for that motor is failing.

You really need an A.C. service person to be able to tell you what's what.

Cheers,

Bill
