My compressor will not start

by Kurt Dingman

My compressor is 2-3 years old. It probably has 2-3 total hours used on it. I tried to start it today and it would not start. WHat do you think is wrong? Thank you for your help.

Kurt, have you checked on the power supply? That's the first step.

Is the power switch turned on, has the pressure switch a toggle on it that needs to be turned to "Run", is there air in the tank (bleed it down below cut in pressure so that the compressor can start)?

These are few things that you can check right away.

If none of these tips work, give me some feedback in this thread as to what, or what does not happen, when you plug it in or turn on the switch.

Cheers,

Bill

I t is a sears craftsman with double tank and wheels with the handles. Could it be a capacitor problem and if so how do I check it with my Fluke?

Good question.

Be careful. A capacitor stores energy for quick discharge, and if you don't check it properly, you'll get a nasty jolt if it's holding power.

I don't do electricity! At least, I don't tell folks how to do it, as I am not an electrician or an electric motor mechanic.

You might ask Fluke.

You might better, if you aren't entirely sure, take the motor and capacitor(s) to a motor shop and ask them to test them.
