my compressor runs for about 30 seconds then won't turn anymore

A speedaire compressor just came into my life, A friend told me it had something wrong with it but didn't know what when he gave it to me. It's an 80gal vertical 7.5hp 3 phase with a 5f565 compressor on it.

The problem that I'm having is that it runs for a short time, maybe 30 seconds, starts to build up pressure, then slows and locks up.

When I turn it manually it won't go past what seems to be top dead center. I have no idea if it's worth fixing, any advice would be great, thanks

Robin, the order of things I would check are...

~if oil lubed, the oil level
~ a motor load test
~ the pump cylinder and piston assembly

It could be any number of things that are causing this problem, and I don't have enough info from you to guess more accurately than that.

Good luck.

Bill

well, the motor seems fine and the oil level was a little high. I did have to transport it on it's side, but I let it sit a few days before I tried to run it. The weird thing is that when it did run, it sounded fine and no vibrations. Now, I can only turn the compressor about 300 degrees. I can hear a bit of air leaking out of the crankcase when I loosen the fill plug. I feel that it's not the bottom end since it didn't tap when it ran. I could be wrong though. Is there any way it's getting air locked, or that there's still oil in the cylinders?

Thanks Again,
Robin

When it runs for the 30 seconds, are you getting any pressure increase in the tank?
