my air compressor quit working - all it does is hum now

i have a 240 v air compressor and it just quit working all i tdoes is hum now. Did the starting capicitors go bad? how do you test them?

Bret, if you are saying that the motor is humming, then that suggests that the pressure switch has tripped, and power is flowing to the motor.

And yes, if nothing else in the power supply has changed, it is quite possible that your start capacitor is failing.
