Motor starts and stops/ starts and stops @ 20 pounds of pressure

Motor will start fine then at 20# it will start to bogg down then restart over and over.

I've been thinking about this complaint for a couple of days.

A compressor that reaches 20 PSI and stops, would suggest to me, if the normal cut out pressure level was 120 PSI for example, that it had a bum pressure switch.

That yours is lugging as it approaches 20 PSI, and then starts and stops is puzzling. Here's what I think.

Your motor is struggling as the back pressure in the tank is reaching the 20 PSI, and that's slowing the motor. The motor is overheating, and cutting off on thermal. When it cools, the pressure switch is still calling for pressure, so the motor, now cool, starts again, gets into the lugg, and stalls again.

Make sure you have clean power to your compressor and don't use an extension cord.

If you do have clean power, no extension cord, the pump seems to work, then check the run capacitor on your motor is it's equipped. Wouldn't hurt to have the motor and caps checked at a motor rebuild shop to rule out the motor as the problem. If the motor and capacitor(s) are OK, then that suggests you have a load buildup in the pumping process, and need to look to a mechanical solution.

Cheers,

Bill
