motor spins slow and then stops

the electric motor is a 220v 5 HP century electric. The motor will turn with no belt and trys to spin with belt on but stops and hums

The motor is stopping and humming under load because it cannot overcome that load.

The reasons are varied. Poor power supply, run capacitor failing, motor itself failing, a mechanical failure back-loading the motor shaft... many, as you can see.

Please re-read the reasons why linked from this page, do some checks, and re-post as a comment with some details about what you have learned from checking out (very carefully - 220 V is not friendly).
