Motor hums

I have a 15 amp compressor. Use on worksite. Plug it in by itself on a 20 amp circuit with 10 gauge extension cord. Pressures up but when it comes on as pressure drops all it does is hum.

Al, it could be a bunch of things.

I know it's plugged in via a H.D. extension cord. Can you take it to the socket and plug it in directly just to rule out the cord / power supply as the problem?

Then, if that doesn't change things, drain all the air to zero and try to start it. Any change? Post a comment here and let me know, will you?
