Model SDS100E3D 3 gallon 1 hp motor keeps running even when it hits 120 psi.

Seems to have a small leak at the switch box no crack but it is like it isn't tightened enough, or the little release valve with the little ring that you pull may be what is leaking.

The motor should turn off shouldn't it when it gets to the 120 psi?

So I am a girl and I don't have any idea what I am talking about.

This is my first air compressor, but I borrowed a smaller portable from my friend and it turned the motor off when it reached its pressure limit.

It leaks by the little black box in picture 3 along the edge where the metal meets the plastic black box.

Can I still use it if the motor is running all the time?

I paid 20 bucks for it...just need a finish nailer to do the rest of the trim.

I surmise from what you've written that the "little black box" has or is failing. That's the pressure switch, and it's supposed to turn off the compressor motor when the tank pressure reaches the normal cut out pressure setting.

That there is air leaking when the compressor is stopped suggests that the compressor tank check valve is leaking.

That's probably why you only paid $20 for it! :-)

See the many pages on this site that describe in detail how compressors work, what the various parts do, and the troubleshooting pages are full of information about how to diagnose the typical compressor problems which your compressor appear to have.

I've tried to write the pages so anyone can understand them, man or woman.
