metal shavings in oil

Anybody have issues with metal shavings in the pump crank? I have a 5hp two stage which has developed a lot of noise. It seems as tho the bearings are getting eaten up. I thought I invested in a nice piece of equipment, but to have this happen on a not too very old machine is quite disheartening.
