Leaky pilot valve and rough engine operation

Have a Champion R15B pump with a 11hp Kohler gas engine . Compressor builds pressure fine and reaches cutoff at 175psi but then air leaks out pilot valve and engine struggles to run. Compressor will kick back in at 140psi and reach max again only to struggle again ?

Sounds like your pilot valve may be broken or maladjusted, along with a dirty or stuck check valve.

In short, it's failing to unload, and the above can cause that.

There are variations on this pump, so that's all we can say without further description.

Good luck.

(you have a manual?)
