Unloader valve for compressor

Unloader valve for compressor

2 stage cast iron 5hp 175lbs 80 gal. This unit has 2 safety valves. One of them pops off immediately when you power the unit up. description on valve is BREV PV4,5 BAR D=6,8

I don't find the valve on parts breakdown. Is this the unloader valve?

I can't locate a clear picture of this compressor Walt, so I cannot pinpoint the two PRV's. The photo you supplied sure looks like one.

You have two of them on your Kobalt air compressor. Where are the two located, and which one is this one, please.

Bill

The 2 pop off valves are different types. The one that pops off immediately when you turn the power on is hidden between the compressor and the pulley. Should I assume that the valve is bad or is something causing the valve to pop off? How to test? I can't find a part no. to replace it.

Walt, could you start a new thread, and upload some photos of the PRV's on your air compressor so that we can see them and where they are?

Thanks. I had just responded to your other post. Thanks for the photos.

The first photo, the one you say "operates normal, does not pop off" is the typical PRV that is reading the pressure in the tank. If the tank pressure exceeds the setting, this PRV opens and bleeds off air.

The photo that "valve is hidden between compressor and pully" is also a safety valve. I know this valve is available for about $15.00, but I cannot see where it is installed in the plumbing. You say it's between the compressor and the pulley, but it must be on an air line?

I believe yours is a two stage air compressor, and I suspect that the safety valve in question is in the line between the first and second stages.

If that is correct, that it pops off on start up suggests that the air cannot get into the second stage cylinder, and that suggests that your intake valve on the second stage has failed, and won't allow the air to flow, instantly increasing the pressure in the line and blowing off the safety valve.

Please let me know if the location I describe makes sense.

Bill

Kobalt K7580V2
by: Lorenzo

This model VERY susceptible to blown gasket on valve body, allowing high-side air pressure to get into low side, thus blowing that safety, which is located on the intercooler tube. I had mine blow and a friend's exact model also blew the gasket between low and high side head. I'm also reading about other instances of this online. Mine was about 6 years old when it happened, but used VERY LITTLE. I thought moisture had rotted out valves, but was amazed how spotless the valve plate, valves, and tops of pistons looked. I guess I made the right call running Royal Purple synthetic air comp. oil.

Is that a PRV where the plumbing comes out the side of the tank? (at the edge of the pic.)

You are correct. It is a two stage compressor. This valve appears to be in the line between

my kobalt oilfree compresser sparks when i start it what can be the problem

by isaac

it is a 1.5 hp 155 psi stand up compressor

What is sparking Isaac?

Are the sparks coming from the pressure switch or the motor.

If the pressure switch, replace it.

If the motor, consider getting a load test and the motor rewound.

Cheers,

Bill

Same Problem...
by: Bill

I have the same problem with my Kobalt compressor and even after taking it apart I was stumped. This information was spot on! Cut, spliced and re-routed the white wires and it's good as new. Thanks so much.

Kobalt Sparking
by: Ed

I just finished working on a Kobalt oilfree with the same issue.

There are two white wires that should have been tied off better against the motor winding containing a 30 amp replaceable fuse in the line. These wires were taped to the windings instead of wire tied, ended up the tape gave way and the wires ended up against the commutator where the brushes run which eventually wore through the jacket shorting the wires to the commutator and shooting sparks out of the case.

The fix was, disassemble the top of the unit with an allen wrench, cut out the bad section of wire, I then routed the wire differently on the outside of the motor with a heat shrink shielding and connected back up with a butt splice connector, works perfectly.

The hardest part of the whole repair was the cooling fan on the end of the motor will require a couple of blades bent out of the way to enable the shroud removal without trying to remove the fan and possibly ruining the fan connection to the motor shaft.

It only requires the blades to be moved a little to remove then push back into place when completed. whole repair was an hour to hour and a half.

I hope this helps someone!
Ed

26 gal. was working fine for a few years, now all of a sudden it isn't.

by Mike
(Coarsegold, CA)

I have the Kobalt model # 37296-26 gal. and all I use it for is inflating auto tires.

All was well until a week ago; I needed it and when I flipped the on switch, nothing happened. It clicked and then blew the 15 amp breaker. Re-set the breaker and the same thing; over and over. Not sure what to do next.

A good start Mike would be to visit the troubleshooting section on the sitemap page and look at the pages that have to do with air compressors that blow breakers on start up.

After that, add a comment here with specifics about what you found, if anything, and we'll press on.

Cheers,

Bill

26 gallon oiless 1 1\2 hp motor
by: dave

where can i find a motor for my 26gallon oilless compressor . the motor is gone. brushes are used up and rotor is burned. need help

Dave, check the specs on the motor. Obtain a new one from any motor supplier that has similar specs, similar footprint, and same motor shaft size.

I don't know where you are in the world, but I would expect that somewhere nearby there is a motor supply house.

If you want to make it even easier, remove your compressor motor (make careful note of the wiring) and then take the old one with you to the motor supply house and ask them to give you the same.

My 8 gallon oil free air compresser never shut off Did I miss something.

by Jason
(Arkansas )

My 8 gallon oil free air compresser never shut off and when it's on the gauge needles vibrate but do not move. It holds air and works just doesn't shut off like its suppose to.

Jason, don't know if you missed something or not.

However, I do believe your air compressor has a problem.

If the air compressor runs and runs, doesn't shut off, and the tank pressure gauge stays almost in one place, then the air that your compressor pump is trying to get into the tank isn't getting there.

See the troubleshooting section on the sitemap page and read the info about why air compressors run but don't build pressure, for some tips.

Add a comment here with your findings, if you wish.

Cheers,

Bill
