king model 8498 5 gal air compressor i don't hear the piston sputtering

the motor comes on but i don't hear the piston sputtering to intake air. lots of diagrams available on the king site including the parts diagram but I can;t seem to locate which part I should be checking out. There is no air buildup whatsoever. I've never changed the oil but the level is fine. Would changing the oil make any difference or should I be checking some other part. thanks

At this point, changing the oil can't hurt, but assuming that it's still oil in the sump, and not sludge, that's not likely the compressor problem.

Remove the intake filter on the side of the pump. Start the compressor. Do you feel air being sucked in? That will tell you whether or not the pump is running.

If the pump isn't, and the motor is, I'd be looking for some sort of power transmission issue between the motor shaft and the pump.

Cheers,

Bill
