Intercooler in air compressor

what is the advantage of using Inter-cooler in the multistage air compressors? How it improves the overall efficiency of the compressor? Please explain me elaborately.

If you want specifics, I'd suggest you contact some compressor manufacturers that offer the intercooler as an option. I am sure they will provide the evidence to support the use of them in their compressors.
