motor shuts down when the air valve is opened,could this be a serious issue

James, it sure is if you are trying to use the compressed air.

When a discharge from the compressor tank occurs, the air pressure drops, this reaches a set point in the pressure switch, that flips a switch (very simple explanation, obviously) and that interfaces with the throttle on a gas compressor to rev up the engine and start compressing air.

Is your problem serious? I don't know. The little I know about gas powered compressors suggests that it's the pressure switch / throttle interface that's not working, and instead of revving up the engine, it's somehow shutting it off.

My best guess.
