Rotary screw air compressors typically use oil as a sealing device as well as a lubricant as the screws rotate to compressor air.

For the compressed air moving from the screws into the air mains or tank, there is a sophisticated oil-removal system.

For oil to be coming back out of the intake port suggests to me that you have a seal leak between the intake and the screws chamber, and residual pressure in there blows some oil back out the intake when the compressor stops, since the air pressure is no longer being directed into the main or tank.

This type of compressor isn't usually an owner-maintain type unless the owner is quite skilled, and if you rely on your compressor for work, I suggest you get a maintenance contract with a local repair service.

Cheers,

Bill
