Ingersoll Rand model 2475 7.5 Compressor Popping Noise

Have an Ingersoll Rand model 2475 7.5 hp type 30 recip compressor used in a cabinet shop.

It has begun making a loud popping noise when it nears or reaches the cut out pressure of 175 psi.

Does not make a popping sound at other times but seems to run like it always has.

It is an old unit (10+ years) but it has worked very good until now.

Any ideas?

Had some milky oil recently but drained it and refilled with fresh oil.

Don't think that has anything to do with it. Any help appreciated.

Maybe it is a temperature related thing -
In any event, perhaps the tank is starting to go and the creaking (could that be the word for this?) is metal on metal expansion noise.

Might want to look around the machine to see if paint has chipped off anywhere.
