Air Filter Element for Ingersoll-Rand Model XE7 (Australia)

by Berta
(Adelaide, South Australia, Australia)

The Part No. for this model is: 97181531 and appears to be approx. 3cm square, grey/black sponge-like filter.

Due to the age of the compressor (early 1990's) I cannot find a supplier of this part.

Am I able to use a filter from another model and/or brand name and cut it to size.

The original size may have been bigger, having shrunk over the years. We have had the compressor from new but has never been serviced or opened up to check anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Berta, if you are talking about the air intake filter, then yes, try to match the media (auto parts stores often have filters that you can cut to size). You don't want a too tight filter to stop intake, nor one that's too loose to let too much crud in, but you can find another brands air filter media that works, I'm sure.

If under warranty I'd say buy the same brand. Out of warranty, do what you have to do.

:-)

Cheers,

Bill

IR compressor bogs down 20KW standby generator

by ledolectric systems

Hi Bill,

Old 2-3 HP single phase 220v 30 amp. IR compressor bogs down 20KW standby generator

I recently installed a Generac 20kw natural gas fired standby generator for my buddy's automotive repair/gas station.. the genny gives me 100amp output @ 220-230 V.A.C.

the problem is when we tested the genny out the other day, all was fine,...the (3)dispenser pumps worked, the fluorescent shop lights came on and small loads like the cash register and TV all worked fine...UNTIL the compressor kicked in... all of a sudden the lights dimmed, flickered and shut off... I ran outside to the genny thinking she either stalled or the 100 amp breaker at the unit tripped... but everything was working fine so we shut the compressor off at the disconnect.

My question is this,... is there a device I can wire to the compressor motor to "boost" the juice and make her start more softly?.. There is already a start/run cap enclosure for the motor but I think I need some auxiliary help here... any ideas?

If your "2-3hp" compressor is working right, it should probably be drawing something less than 12A running and maybe 15 or so starting surge.

Does the gen have volt and ammeters?

whether it does or not, you need to check the output under load without the compressor, and then either the total with the compressor on, and/or the draw with just the compressor.

In other words, it sounds like the gen may be somewhat underpowered for your application.

But if it is not, and the compressor is drawing more than it should, you could have a previously unknown case of bad or weak start and/or run capacitors.

Other than that, if it is just a short surge taking the gen down, then a motor-generator set might smooth it out, but that'd be un-cheap.

Otherwise, you may have to get a separate gen for the compressor.

BTW, it looks to me that your 20kw gen would only be good for around 90A, not 100A at 220V.

Please let us know what you find, and try to have fun...
