In Line Needle Regulator or Valve

Needle Vavle

Needle Vavle

I bought a used 1980 Sears 20Gal. 95/125 psi air compressor and it needed some parts. The switch was built by Furnas Electric Co. The motor was built by Doerr Electric Co. Between the swicth and the top of the motor is a 1/4 copper tube. When I took that off there is the part I have pictured. I have no idea which way it faces or even if it is important. Can you tell me what this part is, how to reinstall this part, and if it needs to be reinstalled.

It's really hard to tell from the picture. I assure you though, it is important. The manufacturer wouldn't have added a part and the cost to do so if that part wasn't needed.

In order to work, the pressure switch has to be reading the pressure from somewhere. More modern compressors have the pressure switch sitting on the nipple out of the tank, and the pressure switch is reading the tank pressure all the time.

When the pressure switch senses that the pressure in the tank has reached the cut out pressure setting, the pressure switch trips, cuts power to the motor, and at the same time, opens the cylinder over the piston(s) to atmosphere, to allow trapped pressure out.

You say that the tube goes to the top of the motor. Do you mean the top of the electric motor, or the top of the compressor pump?

The 1/4 inch copper tube runs from the top of compressor motor head to the pressure switch. The in line piece I have pictured is located somewhere along that 1/4 copper tube. The picture has a locking nut on it.
