hydrovane compressor struggles at cut off point

We got this comp 2nd hand from an internet auction site.

about a couple of weeks after that I began to hear the hydrovane
start to make a crackling noise when it was near to being full.
I replaced the oil (very mucky) and for a few days it was okay
but then the noise and the feeling that it was struggling to cut off at the end of it's cycle returned. Any ideas?

popping or crackling
by: mark

Hi guys thanks for getting back.
I'll do an oil change on Tuesday when i'm back at work.

I guess one man's crackling is another man's popping. Not sure now of the best description. I'll take a closer look. I would have
said that the sound resembled an electrical one
but I'll let you know.

thanks for your replying.

Is it a crackling or more of a popping noise? If its a popping noise then the vanes need replacing, the popping is air creeping past the vanes when theyre worn, which means its not compressing the air properly

Change the oil again. Given the way hydrovanes work, there's probably crud stuck under them, that gets pushed around and makes them stick again.
