How to spec new compressor for my needs.

I am looking to purchase a compressor. I am a homeowner. The compressor will be used to blow out my in ground sprinkler system every fall and also for filling tires, maybe an impact wrench. I am a home owner. It will sit in my garage and it will be used only occasionally and no need to use more than one tool at a time. I will not use for painting or sanding tools. It will have very light use except for the annual irrigation system blow out. My irrigation company recommends that I get a compressor that will produce 8cfm at 50 psi. I don't know if that is necessary or not.

What type of compressor should I buy? I don't want to buy more than I need. I don't want to buy something so small that it is frustrating to use. The run from my garage to the input on the sprinkler system is about 50 feet or so.

How big a compressor
by: Bill

Rob, I understand your desire to get a compressor that does what you need, and doesn't break the bank, too.

The page this forum is on now has pretty much all the information about compressor sizing. I've also got a page on this site about blowing out sprinkler lines which is here: http://www.about-air-compressors.com/compressed-air-sprinklers.html
and this sprinkler page will give you the information about what size of compressor you'll need based on the size of your sprinkler installation.
