How to change cylinder piston seals?
Bill answers...Hi Garth, nice to hear from you again.
How to change piston seals is a big topic for a small "how to", don't you think?
I can only provide guidelines as each compressor will have it's own sequence of dis-assembly and reassembly. If you need specific details for your compressor, it's time to find a manual or get professional help.
Not too many folks will want to undertake this as it's a comprehensive task. Certainly, I wouldn't. :-)
Essentially you have to disassemble the compressor head (placing the parts is some sort of order so that you know what sequence to reassemble) and get down to the piston.
Are the seals on the piston or in the wall of the cylinder?
Are they split seals or whole? Removing them if they are split is straightforward. If they are whole seals, you'll have a job to remove, and more importantly, to re-install the new ones. You may need a special wrench for the latter.
Examine the cylinder walls to see if damaged or scored. If so, you've got a bigger problem than the seals and if it were me, it would be time to consider scrapping the unit.
Once the seals are replaced reassemble and test.
Simple guidelines...quite difficult to do. Good luck with your task and let us know how it turns out, would you? If you'd like to send photos contact me through the contact form and I'll send you an address so we can put your photos up for others to see.
Cheers,
Bill
