Hitachi EC 12 Won't start when cold

by Andrew Christensen

My air compressor is relatively new and little use. It will not start when it is cold. It kicks off the overload switch on the compressor when when it is cold. When it warms up, it runs and starts fine. Any help would be appreciated.

Bill say....

Andrew, I understand your compressor's pain! I don't start very well when I'm cold either.

Here's the thing. When the compressor gets cold, so does the oil. When the oil is cold, it adds load to the drive system. If you add load to the drive system, that increases the load on the motor. If the load on the motor increases (it needs more amperage) and the motor draws more amperage than the circuit can provide, the fuse or breaker blows.

Bottom line, warm up your compressor before you try to start it.

Cheers,

Bill
