Help with oil for old compressor

by Greg DeWald
(Wadsworth, IL, USA)

My parents bought a 5 HP, 60 gal Sanborn Magna Force Air Compressor in 1991 and it still works great. However, my husband went to change the oil and could not find the type of oil that is listed in the manual: SAE 40 non-detergent oil only

Does anyone know if we can just use the Compressor Oil sold at Ace Hardware? We live in Lake County IL and are unable to find Non-Detergent SAE 40 Oil.

Thank you,

Greg DeWald

SAE 40 non-detergent oil

Hummm, no shortage of suppliers of SAE 40 non-detergent oil if you simply Google that term, Greg.

However, as far as I'm concerned, if it were my air compressor, I would have no problem using non-detergent compressor lubricating oil purchased from a hardware store.
