Freeze warning and reciprocating compressor

by Ron

I have a Quincy QT-5 reciprocating compressor. Located in Texas we are expecting below freezing temperatures for over 36 hours which is unusual. What should I do to protect my compressor and what can I do to make sure it will produce air when I start it up in the morning?

Hello Ron.

I take it from your question that you leave your compressor outside? Can you bring it into a warmer environment overnight. That's the logical first step.

Otherwise, make sure it's drained down, recognize that if the oil gets really cold it will add to the start up load for the compressor, tarp it to keep it dry, and good luck!

I can't think of anything else. I leave mind in a garage with no heat and it's been zero degrees F a couple of times this winter hear. I'll just drag it into a warmer place to allow the oil to warm up, then fire it up. I don't expect to have a problem with mine, and I don't think you should have any with yours.

Cheers,

Bill
