electric motor is slow then stops entirely

oil is good, breaker is ok, it worked fine yesterday, tanks were drained after each use, gets only light workouts and is about 8 years old.

Henry, are you getting pressure build up in the tank before it stops?

Any change in power supply, using an extension cord, anything like that?

Please post your response as a comment here.

Thanks,

Bill

tanks open

No pressure buildup when I last tried to use. In fact, I normally leave the tanks open for a minute before closing to build pressure. Like I said, it ran slowing for a few seconds like there was a brown out, then slowed right down and stopped altogether. Total run time was about 4 to 5 seconds. It was plugged directly into a wall outlet, no extension chord this time or any other time I've used this compressor in the past. That same day I brought it into the house to really warm up for a few hours but there was no response at all.

motor slow then stops

Thanks for the help. The fact that it ran slowly for 3 seconds before stopping is baffling. I will however have someone check to see if power is getting through to the switch, motor etc.

Some air compressors have a start / run capacitor, others don't. That might account for it.

check the capacitor
by: AB

check the capacitor, the motor requires this to work and start. if your compressor is 8 years old the capacitor could have failed. it might be worth a look on ebay, typical prices are between £6-£10 pounds alway worth a punt

Is pressure building up ?
by: Anonymous

I leave the valve on tanks open for 30 seconds before restarting and building up pressure.

The compressor motor is not operating at all currently ( not even slowly ) and there is no pressure in the tanks. ( tank valves are open )

Thanks for getting back to me on this.

I'm thinking you need to have your motor checked out, assuming that power is getting to the motor through the pressure switch.

You are welcome.
