drain nut won't close

We drained the tank and now we cannot keep it from leaking air from the drain once we try to retighten the nut. What are we doing wrong?

Sometimes the tank drains turn in an opposite direction than you think, to open and close them. Try turning your drain handle the other way to see if that makes any difference. Turn to completion, whether it's opening or closing. One way or the other should work... unless....

You don't indicate how much air is coming out. If it's been a long time since the compressor was drained, it is possible that there is some debris in the valve that is preventing it from shutting completely.
