I have a dewalt 55146 belt driven compressor. The cooling fan starts and just runs the main motor doesn't start. If I turn it off and on then the cooling fan will start and then 2 secs later the main motor runs fine. It is an intermittent problem. I took the unit apart and cleaned dust out of the motor that didn't help. I checked my belt and that seems to be fine.

OK, Jeff. I tried to find the schematic for the motor, and even though their website shows a drop down menu offering the manual, it never arrives.

I wanted to see how the fan shaft was attached to the motor shaft (if it is) as it is common for a motor to have a shaft at both ends, one connected to the pump, the other to run the fan.

I'll have to rely on other folks to comment on this problem.

Belt drive Dewalt
by: Buster

Hey Bill, I was able to open the drawings for the Dewalt compressor, and as you suspected, the fan and the drive for the belt is on a common shaft. If the fan is running, and the compressor is not running, the belt must be slipping on the pulley, or the pulley could be loose on the motor shaft.
Maybe this helps.
