My compressor will not rise above 50 or 60.It keeps running but doesn't rise any higher until I turn it off. It is a 5 HP 25 gallon single cyl/oil free craftsman.Model number 919.165250

Howdy Coleman. When you read the diagnosis tips on these pages about air compressors that won't build pressure, which did you look at on your air compressor, please?

While there is always a wild card that can confuse the issue, by and large, air compressors that don't build pressure suffer from only a few similar problems, and it's the intake valves first, and then likely an internal gasket second, that seem to be the most common problems.

You don't tell me what you've checked, so please read the pages about compressors that don't build pressure, and post a comment here telling what you found when you checked them out.

Then, maybe, we can work towards resolving your Craftsman air compressor problem together.

Cheers,

Bill

I checked the piston, the ring, the sleeve of the piston, the 0 ring that sits on the head. These all look good.I replaced the air regulator valve and now it builds up to 80 and stays there but does not shut off. Thanks

My that's quite the tear down! Did you get a chance to check the intake valve by feeling if air is huffing out of the intake port? If no huffing, then it could still be a valve, but the compression valve versus the intake, and it could still be a gasket.

That the pressure is now building to 80 PSI suggests to me that it's valve issue too. Good luck.

Craftsman compressor won't build pressure...motor just runs

by Justin
(Connecticut)

I have a small 12 gallon 1hp Craftsman oil air compressor that I use for very light duty.

Yesterday, while attempting to add air to my tires, I noticed after turning it on, it just sits at 20psi on both gauges and will not build tank pressure.

I am fairly mechanical, but know NOTHING about compressors. Any suggestion where I should start?

THANKS

Hey Justin. Welcome. Thank you for writing in.

Tell me, did you get a chance to read the questions and answers posted at the bottom of the "Compressor Will Not Build Pressure' page?

I suspect that you'll find the answer to your problem there if you just take the time to review them.

Immediate checks include is the drain valve closed, any leaks bleeding off air anywhere, is the motor shaft turning...these and the others noted.

If nothing noted works, do write back in telling me what you've checked so far, OK?

Cheers,

Bill
