craftsman air compressor will not build enough pressure

I have a craftsman air compressor 3 gallon 1 hp oil lubricated. I have had the compressor for about 5 years and use it to pump up tires. The other day, while I was pumping air into tires, the pressure dropped from 90 to 25 psi on the large pressure guage & 35 psi on the other. What could have caused this?

So, while the compressor is running, the air pressure in the tank will not rise past 25 PSI, is that correct?

Odd then that the regulator gauge would show 35 PSI, as the regulator setting will drop as the air pressure reaching the regulator falls below the regulator set point.

With the absence of any detail about your compressor, I suspect that an internal gasket has failed, or one of the internal valves may be failing.

Both will require a tear down to identify and correct, if that is the cause.

Cheers, and sorry about that,

Bill

The regulator gauge may be reading the pressure in the tire feeding back to the gauge. I suspect the piston seal or reed plate for the cause of lack of building pressure in the tank.

Leroy, there's a bunch of reasons why an air compressor will run and won't build pressure. Those you can find linked from the Troubleshooting section on the site map page.

When you say it sounds bad, what are you hearing?

Cheers,

Bill
