7hp 60 gallon craftsman air compressor blows breaker. When I reset breaker the unit growls and trips breaker.

Sorry Martin. Not enough info.

What "growls"? Is the noise coming from the pump or the motor?

Anything different in the way or frequency you are using the compressor?

I discovered the tripped breaker and traced it to the compressor. I reset the breaker and plugged the compressor back in. A very loud howl was emitted and I immediately unplugged the unit before the breaker could trip. I cannot say whether the source was the motor or the pump, and it occurred to me that repeating the process woud simply produce more damage than may already have been done.
The question is what steps can be taken without electrical power to identify the root cause?

Not knowing the model or HP, it's hard to be definite.

I would unshackle the motor from the pump, whether by removing a belt or a coupling I can't be sure. That way the motor would not have a load.

With the tank empty of air, start the compressor. If the sound is absent, then it's a good bet that the source is the pump.

What is the manufacturer's name on the pressure switch, or perhaps, on a label under the lid?

If you remove your switch and take it with you to the compressor parts store, I suspect you will find one similar to yours. Make sure that the unloader valve lever is comparable, if yours has one.

Cheers,

Bill
