craftsman 919.153100 turns on and shuts off many times to finally build to max pressure

When I first turn it on it will build to a pressure somewhere between 30 and 50 psi and will shut off. After approx. 20 to 40 seconds it will kick back on for approx 5 to 10 seconds slightly increasing the pressure before shutting off. It will continue to do this many times until it reaches what appears to be the max pressure at apprx 125 psi.

With max pressure in the tank, if I release the pressure it will usually not kick on at all until the pressure is nearly down to about 10 psi, where at that point it will again start the on and off routine to build the pressure back up.rt and s

I have had the capacitors checked out as good.

I have also ran the pump with the line between the pump and the check valve disconnected to see if the check valve may have not been working and building up to much pressure against the motor. This did not change anything as the motor still shut off after just a short time running and then kicked on and off again as I previously described.

I have viewed the pressure switch points when it is running and when it kicks off and noticed that the points/contacts remain together when the pump shuts off while it is going through the on and off routine to build up pressure.

Any suggestions or assistance you can offer to reach a solution is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Cycling compressor

I agree with you Bill, heat related problem with motor.

Some motors have thermal protection built into the windings that automatically reset, and would emulate the conditions described here, to protect the motor from overheating conditions, could be related to failing caps, or possibly cooling fan failure, or blocked air flow to the motor.

This unit has a duty cycle of 50% and warns that damage could result to the compressor, common warning.

I would check the amperage to the motor, find a friend that has a clamp on ammeter, to see if it is in the specified running range that is on the nameplate.

Still could be a failing cap.

Craftsman shutting down

Tough one, Rex.

Who checked the caps, as the symptoms sure sound like a bad or failing capacitor.

That the pressure switch points stay closed when the compressor shuts off points to the motor and an electrical issue, as far as I'm concerned.

What's your power supply like? 20 amp breaker circuit, no extension cords or power bars???

If you've plugged it into a 20 amp breaker power supply and still experiencing the issue, I'm still thinking cap, maybe a centrifugal switch, may a heat related short in the motor.
