CRAFTSMAN 40 GAL COMPRESSOR COMPRESSOR WONT SHUT OFF

by SAUL GARCIA
(ANSONIA, CT USA)

I HAVE A CRAFTSMAN 40 GAL COMPRESSOR THAT WONT TURN OFF EVEN AFTER IT REACHES ITS MAX PSI.

BUT IF I TURN IT OFF MANUALLY AND TURN THE SWITCH BACK ON THE COMPRESSOR WONT TURN BACK ON UNLESS THE PRESSURE GOES DOWN.

Hi Saul.

Listen, when it kept running after it reached it's max PSI, did the pressure keep building in the tank until the PRV blew?

That symptom says to me that the pressure switch may not be working on the high pressure cut out side.

If the compressor won't turn back on until the pressure in the tank goes way down, to me, that means that you have an unloader valve issue.

Check out the unloader valve page linked from the valves page and the sitemap.

To me, it seems that your Craftsman may have two problems.

Keep us posted, OK?

Bill

Compressor won't shut off
by: Saul

I replaced the switch with my friends just for kicks and it's working fine it was the pressure switch. Must be worn out not sure but it cuts on at 100 and off at 120. Thanks

919.71752 air compressor - lugging problem

by Dave. D
(Canada)

My air compressor starts fine but as the pressure builds the motor slows down an stalls-starst- slows speeds up etc.
After removing the drive belt and starting the motor the motor runs fine (without load)

Is this a capacitor problem or is the capacitor only used to start the motor?

The unit was buit in 1977 so is up ther in age (like me).

Model 919.71752 2hp 60hz 220v 15A

Hi Dave.

The first thing I would check is the check valve. If it's binding then that could account for the motor speeding up and slowing down, as the check valve blocked or allowed air into the tank. By blocking air flow the increase in load could slow the motor.

I doubt that it's the capacitor, as this provides a boost on motor start up, and once inrush is over, the capacitor stores a charge for the next start. If the motor starts OK, in my mind, that leaves out the capacitor.

You may simply have a failing motor.

If the check valve is OK, take the motor to an electrical motor rebuild shop for a test.

By the way, you didn't once live in Erin, did you?

Cheers,

Bill

919.166600 at 30psi starts bogging down and motor stops

by frank vaccaro
(st.louis, mo)

I recently took over my dads craftsman air compressor which is model #919.166600 6.5 HP 60 gallon 220v

I wired a new outlet to the garage using 8 gauge wire it is right at 15 feet from compressor to circuit panel, it worked fine at dads but at 30 PSI the motor starts bogging down and shuts off any advice you could give me?

Thanks so much ...frank
______________
What is the amperage of the breaker for the compressor, Frank.

Once you know the breaker amperage, do a google check for amperage to HP to make sure the breaker is big enough.

And is anything else pulling power from the circuit?

Craftsman air compressor blowing fuse

by Carl
(Elma n.y)

Craftsman 25 gallon air compressor

Not much to go on, Carl.

Blows fuse during what circumstances... start up, when it's running, does the compressor pump air into the tank, what pressure does the tank get to, are you using an extension cord, how old is the compressor, what is the model number, is it hardly used or heavily used?

Maybe you could provide some more info as a comment here so I can try and help?

Compressor blowing fuse
by: Carl

Hi, I have a old craftsman 25 gallon when I try to start it up the motor sounds bound up tow or three seconds later it blows the fuse. Don't use it often, there is no air in tank. Any ideas, or is it just shot?
_______________
Tough call, not being able to hear the motor trying to start. Any air in the tank when you are trying? If so, empty the tank fully and try again. What about the capacitors? See the page on how to check them if you wish. Whether or not its fixable depends on how handy you are and what actually is the compressor problem. Not a decision I can make for you, Carl.
