Hi, I received this craftsman 12 gallon 1.25 air compressor 2 years ago for Christmas. I have only used it maybe 8 times to put air in tires. Yesterday after the tank fulled up. I noticed the oil level had dropped down to empty. I had just checked it before turning it on and it was fine. So i turned it off and opened up the drain valve to let out the air. I got a hand full of oil. Would you have Any ideal of what would cause this to happen? I really appreciate your help. craftsman 12 gallon 1.25 air compressor.

Small Craftsman compressor with oil in tank
by: Bill

In order for oil from the compressor sump to end up in the tank an opening must have developed between the sump and the tank. This isn't likely.

The piston is splash lubed from the sump as the compressor operates and vibrates.

If the piston seal has been compromised, the oil that's splashing up inside the cylinder bypasses the seal, and enters the tank with the compressed air.

That this happens in such volume on your compressor suggests a major failure in the piston / cylinder.
