Crafstman 30 gal oiless compressor

runs but will not build up pressure. It will build up to about 20lbs or so. also sounds like its ratting inside. Pump turns free by hand. Not a very old unit

Hi Jeff:

Check your intake valves first. Hold your hand over the inlet port to feel if it's huffing and puffing. There should not be any air puffing out as the compressor cycles.

If this isn't the problem, the second most common issue is an internal gasket failure, so air is flowing across the gasket from high pressure to low, and not allowing air to move into the tank to raise the pressure.

Check your manual for instructions, and if there aren't any (no surprise) you either need to take the compressor head apart yourself to check, or have someone do it for you.
