Cpmpressor builds to 40psi and that is it. runs continuously

hello, i have a craftsman 2hp 5 gallon air compressor for 2 years basically just pumping up tires and running a nail gun at the house. Now the compressor comes on and run cont. and only builds 40 psi's. The compressor will hold 40psi's . any ideas? Thanks so much Jack

Hello Jack. Your problem is shared by literally hundreds of small compressor owners.

The causes are a failing intake valve, a failed gasket inside the compressor, a major leak, mechanical failure of the drive train.

Take off the intake filter and feel near the open port when the compressor is running. Is air coming out and in? Could be the intake flapper valve.
