CPFAC 2600 P runs to about 20 psi and stops

The above compressor starts normally, and runs to about 20 psi and stops.

After a few seconds, it starts up again.

Runs for one second or two and adds a little more pressure.

It continues cycling like this endlessly...running for a second or two and stopping for 10 to 20 seconds.

The pressure gradually builds to 100 psi (possibly more) over a long period of time (an hour or more).

What could be the problem?

Well, it's not called out, but I think there must be some sort of over current device in the motor.

If you can get an ammeter, maybe you could check the current.

Otherwise, I suggest you take another look at the motor - this time, the armature, to see if it's discolored or burnt somewhere, and see if you can clean it up.

And if you can find the over current gizmo, perhaps try bypassing it so see if perhaps it is what's failed. Being prepared to turn it off if you get smoke...

Good luck.

It's a type 0, 2hp, 02-21-02 is on the bar code sticker so I guess it is 15 years old (got it used)
Thanks for responses.

It's 2hp, no suffex to model # so must be 0. Bar code sticker says 02-21-02. Has the black rectangular box control switch . No switching takes place within the box as it tries to cycle on...it pauses and tries again and again endlessly. Disconecting from power and waiting a while allows it to come on for a few seconds adding another psi.
Thanks again to your efforts to help.

Which type is this? 0,1,2,3?

or even CPFAC 2600 PW? 0,1?

Or, more generally, does yours have a visible rectangular pressure switch (probably mostly black), or just a rocker switch (mostly red)?

Is the compressor motor unduly hot when it stops?

Did anything change with how you power it? Try it plugged directly into a wall socket.

If that's not it, then maybe check the brushes. Maybe you can remove the cover and see if you see sparks or anything while it runs, If you do, check and maybe replace them.

Come back with whatever you find, please.

Good luck.
