I am assuming that it is your compressor motor that's humming?

The compressor motor hums when it is trying to start but cannot.

It cannot start as the load on the motor may exceed the motor capacity on start up, or that something in the system is preventing the motor from starting, or there are too many other things pulling power from the same line, and the motor hasn't enough "juice" to get going.

I am also assuming that this is a new problem, and that your compressor was working before?

One thing to check, and something that happens pretty often, based on the number of messages I get about it, is that the unloader valve hasn't worked, and the load is too great for the motor to start against. Go to the Valve page and click the link to unloader valve.

Another thing that might be the problem is the capacitor has or is failing. Go to the Troubleshooting page and click the link to my compressor won't start. Many tips are there for you to help diagnose your compressor problem.

Cheers,

Bill
