Compressor won't pump up past 120 PSI

by Al

I have one of these WL Model Campbell Hausfield models. 150 rated PSI with oil-less pump.

The unit pumps up to about 120, but no further and will not shut off.

I disassembled the pump and valves, but really did not notice any thing, but not sure what to look for.

No air leaks on unit. What do you recommend to trouble shoot? Campbell Hausfield suggested new piston and valve kit.

Howdy Al...

If the unit is cycling, and the air pressure can't get past a certain pressure level, and that pressure level is below the cut-out pressure set point, than your unit will continue to run until it burns out.

To get a better understanding of how a reciprocating compressor works click here.

If you've got no leaks, then it would seem reasonable that the air seals are worn to the point that the pressure can't get past the 120 PSI point due to blow back. So, I'm not going to second guess CH, as I think they are right.

However, having said that, what tool do you have that needs 120 PSI?

Adjust your pressure switch so that the cut-out pressure is 110 PSI, and the unit will work well then until the wear issue means that it can't even reach that threshold. Then, either lower the cut-out pressure again, or fix the unit.

Cheers,

Bill

I have exacly the same problem, however...
by: Ritchie (ritchienoodles@yahoo.com)

I have the same issue with my Campbell Hausfeld WL6600. This is an oil-less 22 gallon unit and has a max psi of 125. It has zero leaks but my pressure gauge won't go pass 50-60psi but the motor will keep on going.

I have a smaller working compressor. Its a twin tank 4 gallon Husky that also has a 125 max psi. Instead of fixing my Campbell Hausfeld I just decided to connect it to my smaller Husky so I can use both tanks using just the Husky motor.

The same problem occured. The Husky built up pressure like it's suppose to but the Campbell Hausfeld one still wo'nt go over 50-60 psi.

What could possibly be the problem? I'd greatly appreciate any advise. Thanks!
