Compressor will not stop running - valve pops after reaching 150psi

My compressor will not stop running and once it gets above 150, the safety value pops and releases the air. Then it will begin filling the tank once again. Here is what i have. I've had the compressor for 4 years and it just started doing this last night. I used it 2 days ago and it worked just fine.

Porter Cable 150 psi max (Pancake - oilfree)
6 gallon tank
2 hp
2.6 scfm @ 90 psi

Compressor run on
by: Bill

It says in the comment immediately below yours... "you need to determine if, when the pressure level in the compressor tank bypasses the normal cut out pressure, whether or not the pressure switch has shut off power supply. I would guess not, and that being the case, you probably need a new pressure switch."

The same would apply to your compressor, Lonnie.

Compressor won't shut off
by: Lonnie

Hello

My compressor starts and runs fine, and builds up plenty of pressure.

It runs till the prv pops. The compressor continues to run as the prv lets all the air out. It will run in this condition indefinitely or until it burns up

Is this an adjustment thing, or is the switch bad?

Thanks

Frank, you need to determine if, when the pressure level in the compressor tank bypasses the normal cut out pressure, whether or not the pressure switch has shut off power supply.

I would guess not, and that being the case, you probably need a new pressure switch.

To be sure, use a multi-meter to monitor the motor side of the pressure switch as the pressure in the tank bypasses the normal cut out. If the power stays on, it's likely the switch.
